Hi benson.

Similar operation just opened in Toowoomba (known to some Victorians as "Woop Woop"!), under the name of "Maccas U BRU 4 U".

Called in a few days ago and was shown around by the proprietor Graham. Very impressive set up, and the 4 samples were also very impressive.

Not a franchise as such, but from what I gather, a loose collection of business people with the same aspirations, using similar if not identical approaches.

They use 205L drums of different worts from Lion Nathan NZ, together with variations of dextrose, hops, grain, yeast & water, resulting in a choice of about 200 beer styles.

The beer factory's offerings are similar, if not identical, to Maccas in Toowoomba (sorry, Woop Woop!). Only the names have been changed, in order to appeal to local vernacular - Woop Woop is obviously far more redneck than Seven Hills - things must have changed considerably since I last frequented Seven Hills some 30 odd years ago!

That aside, a very professional operation requiring a considerable cash, not to mention time, investment. Temperature controlled fermentation and conditioning environments, a triple filtration process, and finally a carbonated bottling procedure.

The end result is not bottle conditioned! No yeast sediment to worry about!
And the four samples I had were very very nice.

Probably not for the traditional home brewer, if only because one is bound to operate within clearly laid down parameters. You have about 200 selections, but whichever one you choose, you have to follow the procedure for that particular selection. The upside is that the microbrewrey guarantees your success.

This is certainly an alternative to HB, and it is likely to attract custom from those who have tried HB without being converted, together with those who have not tried HB, but remain dissatisfied with commercail offerings.

With more and more of us utilising apartment style accommodation (yes, even in Woop Woop), this type of alternative HB facility will very likely succeed. And if if it does, good luck to those who have been game enough "to have a go"!
Cheers,

Pacman

There are 3-4 of these in Bris and for my mind they are a bit pricey for what you get.

The main downside for me was that you need to store the whole 150 stubs in the fridge or the heat may spoil them. That is what they told me anyway.

I did about 5 batches before I got into HB. You need 1-2 other blokes in with you so you don't need to store so many in the fridge.

To buy a setup as a business you need nearly $400K which I reckon is very steep for the money you make. They must be making a fortune on the equipment they sell you as the package.

I'm sure there is a market out there but if you want to have a large variety of beers at your house and have some fun experimenting and learning about brewing this is not the way to go IMO.

The beer is OK but it's just extract. I did a corona, xxxx gold, moose head from memory they all kind of tasted the same as they use the same base extract.

The big advantage they have over home brew is the temp control, which most people here have sorted and the filtering.

For mine it is not much better than a K&K with additional grains, good yeast etc and it's more than double the cost with the same amount of time and effort.

Give it a go for yourself and see what you think.
