Bottling with wine bottles

Post by buscador »

I am the newest homebrewer in Melbourne as of this morning. I have the PET bottles from the Coopers kit that I will be using and I am also wonderig if I can use wine bottles. I got 6 bottles months ago from ReWine in Preston Market and have kept them in thhe cupboard clean, they have a capping device on thhe top (thats my best explanation) can I use this?

If so, how many sugar drops should I put in when bottling?

Thanks,

b

If they are 750 mL bottles like the Coopers PETs then its the same amount.

any suggestions on how to plan for the worst ie.explosion in the cupboard

i want to try this, i mean, ive had these bottles empty, staring at me, asking to be filled...they want it..

is it as simple as putting the bottles in bags before shoving them into the cupboard for 2 weeks

Any bottles need to be rated for carbonated drinks.

How so? Because otherwise they'll go f'ing BANG and you will end up with pieces of glass embedded in your body.

Trust those that know this, you don't need to try it yourself .....

I was going to do the same, but too many horror stories put me off

Play it safe, it's not worth it.

Wine bottles are not designed to hold pressure, if you have Tirage (champagne) bottles, it is a different story, as these are perfect for beer bottling, you just need a different capper.

The dimple in the bottom of the bottle (the "punt") will be bigger in bottles suitable for carbonation, except when used in wine bottles, where they are more of a decoration.
I'm sure you all agree, theres nothing like a coldie, even better when it's free!

The punt is actually a pouring aid. You are meant to put your thumb in it to pour wine out of the bottle.

I bottled a few ginger beers to screw top wine bottles (not sparkling) and I didn't have any problems.

Having read this post I probably won't do it again out of fear, but it would be interesting to see whether there is anything to this!
Coopers.
