High FG - Dare I bottle?

I don't ever want a repeat of batch 13 but that on was closer to 1020, and had been at that for five days.

I'm a bit nervous about bottling my curring two brews. Both have been down for 14 days and the SG is unchanged for the past 5 days but it's still a bit high. They are both just holding positive pressure in the airlocks. DO I BOTTLE OR JUST WAIT ???

Coopers Mexican Cerveza on 1.5Kg Coopers Light Malt
OG 1044 - SG 1014

Coopers IPA on 1.5Kg Morgans Amber Malt
OG 1040 - SG 1012

Ofcourse a day or two more isnt going to hurt.

My "all malt" brews regularly finish with SG readings of 1012. I think your brews would be OK to bottle if the SG has been stable for 5 Days.

By the way Geoff. I work in Nowra. Where do you normally get your HB supplies from?

With that amount of malt, and seeing the FG has not changed, I reckon you are safe to bottle. I rarely get below 1012 when there's much malt in brews. Bottle bombs never an issue.

Walshes hardware in the main street have a good range of can kits and malts. Caps and BE plus Coopers when on special at Woolies and Coles. I tried to patronise the HB shop but mostly got out of stock and lame excuses. I believe the business is for sale.

I have also been getting most of my gear from walshes hardware. I find they have a great range of the basic stuff and their prices are pretty competitive (not much HB expertise there though if you need some help). I have tried the HB shop (3 times) and for various reasons I have vowed never to return, (unless it gets sold).

I have been told that walshes get there packaged malts and kegs etc from the HB shop at Albion Park (All Things Brewing).

I have recently started extract brewing with grain and hops and I have been getting some gear from the Northern Brewer up at Woonona. Al is very helpful and friendly.

I will take you up on that offer and give you a buzz. Might even swap a couple of bottles if you like.

As for the HB shop, is that the one you see the sign for when you drive along the princes hwy- opposite the shopping centre?

I don't get down that way nearly as often as I used to, so it was the first time I'd even seen the sign. I didn't stop in though, as I had the GF with me.

Doesn't sound like I missed much though.

Most of the guys I bump into at the HB section at Walshes hardware have also bared the HB shop for one reason or another (price, shit service/advice, stock etc). Walshes have the advantage of being able to sell their HB gear at very competitive prices because they rely mainly on the hardware side for their income and thus they dont have the overheads that a straight out HB store has. So with walshes, woolies and coles nearby, the HB shop has a fair bit of competition.

It's sad when the HB shop can't keep stock or give good service. No wonder they're selling up.
