Gluten-free beer

The good, the bad and the ugly of commercial beer and breweries, including microbreweries and craft breweries.

Gluten-free beer

Post by zephyr »

Sounds like a wild coeliac fantasy, but is no doubt that of a friend of mine who was devastated at the discovery that he is a coeliac - ie he can't process the gluten that is present in wheat, barley and a number of other grains, and therefore can expect a night of excruciating stomach pain should he go against his better judgment and imbibe the amber, along with a range of other bad effects not familiar to those of us who just get inebriated...

Unexpectedly, the first link to jump up when I googled "gluten free beer", was to an Aussie website:

http://www.obrienbrewing.com.au/

who indeed are purveyors of such a beverage!

My questions:
Anyone out there tried this?
How does it compare?
Is it worth the damaging $74 a case plus postage?
(it is only available by mail order)

An initial applaud goes to the O'Brien crew for achieving such a triumph for the beer-challenged coeliac community out there.
i've been spending too much of my beer on money.

I've tried the Lager, I noticed during my last trip to Dan Murphys they have brought out a Pale Ale. It tastes like a normal beer, nothing to exceptional but better than the generic crap most people drink. I think it was going for about $60 a case at Dan Murphys.

A lady at my work gave me a sip of one of these.....

It was atrocious.

I am going to start a recipe thread for this style of beer, as I want to make one for the lady at work.

She loved her beer before finding out the bad news.

Cheers

A homebrew is like a fart, only the brewer thinks it's great.
Give me a flying headbutt.......
