A forum I visited recently asked new members, along with doing the verification numbers, to not fill out anything in the profile section until after registration was approved.
Any new members that filled out any of the fields in their profile prior to being approved are deemed to be spambots and therefore deleted before they ever have access to the board.
Maybe this is an option Oliver could look at?
Edit, spelling

There is no such thing as bad beer. There is only good beer and better beer.

You don't have to have a valid email address to register, but you do to activate the registration and begin posting.
The vast majority of spam registrations are never activated and I delete the accounts. Those that are registered and do post spam are also deleted, after the posts are deleted.
The ease of registration (a new member being able to use a valid email to activate their registration) is a trade-off. Going to the next level of security would involve me or someone else having to approve registrations, which is a disincentive to registering for genuine users.
Hopefully the next upgrade of the forum software will make it harder for automatic spambots to register.
Cheers,
Oliver
