adding oatmeal to stout

Post by haggmaster »

hello all. i want to make an oatmeal stout.
been trying some pommy imported stouts and one that was really good and i thought it would work well with homebrew was the oatmeal.
i read somewhere here that you add about 250g of oatmeal to the wort.
so would you boil and mix it up like a porridge first then mix it in , or just put it in and mix it up with the hot water as in stirring up with the sugar and brew kit? cheers

Oats should be mashed with a base grain, though I`ve used them in stouts and dark beers with a 20 min. hot steep and 24 hour cold steep. I think they`re a bit overated.
Don`t boil the oats or you`ll be in all sorts of trouble. Steep, strain then boil.
Doing a partial mash isn`t much more trouble , with a lot better result.

I have chucked oats into the mash before in an oatmeal stout, but found that they made the mash very slimy, don't know if it affected the flavour though...I read somewhere that you should boil the oats, so last Porter, I used instant oats instead
