Germany, here I come!
Germany, here I come!
Ok well I'm heading to Germany in 3 weeks and spending almost a month between there, Belgium and the Netherlands. Apart from going to Wacken Open Air I have probably close to 2 weeks to explore the countryside, absorb the culture, and most importantly, DRINK BEER. so I really want some recommendations of places to go. Breweries, good pubs, beers to try, etc. I already have the Hofbrauhaus (Munich) locked in as a place to go, but otherwise I have no concrete plans. All I know is, I'm going to flavour country and I want to make the most of it. anyone here been there and have suggestions on what I should do/where I should go? I'm keen to try a lot of abbey beers, too...

One of my mates came back from Germany raving about Bamberg Rauchbier.
It's smoked lager
. Some people love it, heaps of people can't stand it.
worth a try, anyway. Goes well with cheese! (doesn't everything)
We made some this time last year, using Charlie P's recipe "Spider's tongue Rauchbier" from "the complete joy of homebrewing"
good stuff

Having been there last winter [Euro time] I have to say that Bamburg was fantastic - Munich is good and well worth the visit - and the people at the Hoffbrauhaus and other such places were good to us - the other one to look up is Augustinier [have to check spelling] when in Munich who still serve out of barrels
