"Summer lager" suggestions?

Post by Turner »

Hi Guys!

With spring here and Summer just around the corner, I've decided that I'm going to brew a couple of double-batches of a really good lager to drink through those hot days...Christmas, New Years etc. BBQs in the sun, sitting on the front lawn with a bunch of mates eating sausage sandwiches and drinking crisp cold beer, and so on. Can't you just picture it!?!? Ahhhh!!!

I'm looking at something that will make me never want to even THINK about buying a carton, not even of some expensive stuff... I'm thinking a nice thin, crisp Bavarian-style lager - like Lowenbrau, Warsteiner or even Becks. I'm still a kit & kilo brewer, though you can throw anything else at me and I should be able to handle it.

I'm going to the local HB shop right now and I'm just going to invent something on the spot and see how it goes (making this thread got me all antsy), but I'm also going to take the advice of this here forum of experts and I'll have a solid couple of brews ready by December!!

Thanks :D

Just came home form work thinking the same hting, and thinking about posting it. Just cracked a Stella Artois Clone I made about 2 months ago, and It got we wanting the same thing.
Not menaing to hijack the thread, but anyone got any easy drinking summer lagers, something hoppy even, but easy to slam down that we can knock up?

My girlfriend and I just did an Oktoberfest lunch on the Webber - Bavarian-Style Roasted Chicken, Homemade Brined Pork Forequarter, Roasted Onions, Roasted Carrots, Baked Spuds, Brown Sauce and Mustard. And, of course we had to drink a nice, deep, aged, amber-brown Bavarian Lager with it (Coopers Bavarian kit + 100g Choc Malt + 500g dried Light ME + 500g dried Dark ME, 20g Saaz aroma). Bloody Great!!!! Got pissed and really full. Will be posting pics and recipes on our blog soon.
Prost!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, here is a suggestion for a easy drinking summer lager. This one is made up by myself, and not put to the test yet. Any comments or suggestions appreciated.

Summer Lager

I can of Lager Extract ( any will do. I'll try a Morgans or TCB Wals Lager, maybe Morgans Blue Mountain lager )
400gms of Yellow Box Honey
1kg of TCB body Brew ( 600g Dextose / 400g Maltodextron )
500gms of TCB Light Booster (250g Light Malt / 250g Maltodextron)
12g tea bag of Hallertau Hops @ 10min
12g tea bag of Tettnanger Hops @ 15mins

In 2 ltrs of wate rin a pot, boil and add sugars and honey and disolve.
Bring heat down and steep the hops as instucted above.
Remove from heat and add extract can.
Add whole thing to the fermenter and top up to 23 litres.
Add yeast from the tin ( or maybe use a good Saflager yeast )

Brew till SG is 1.006 and then Cold condition or lager for 3 weeks at 3 degrees.
Bottle and store for at least a month.
Bulk prime with 180gms of Dex

Now I have used Hallertau hops and quite like the flavour of them. Never used Tettnenger but thought after looking at other German hops it would suit. Maybe not. Not sure
I'll probably use the Wals Lager extract, as it already has hops in it as well, and makes a godo drop.

Comments on this one? Just looking for an easy drinking lager for the outlaws to ge into on Christmas day.

Has anyone tried using the Nelson Sauvin hop. It tastes fantastic in the Knappstein Reserve Lager but thats way too pricey to be buying on a regular basis. Its very easy to drink and very refreshing.

Its 5.6% from memory, all pilsner malt, all nelson Sauvin. Maybe keep it in the normal 4-5 - 5% range.

I wont be making this but thought something along the lines of the Coopers pilsner kit, 1.5kg of the coopers liquid malt and then plenty of the NS hops @ 20 and 5 and a healthy does dry hopped.

Ag hijack - all weyerman pilsner, NS all the way. But thats after i do the same with saaz altho with the current batch having an AA of 2.2 i need in excess of 100g just to get the IBUs i need.

Cheers
DrSmurto - trying to figure out if i can fit 2 fermenters into the brewing fridge......
