Glad wrap idea

Post by ryan »

I was looking at an old issue of ''The Fermenter" magazine recently and someone came up with the idea of siliconing a perspex "window" in the lid of a pail fermenter to monitor ferment. It looks like the glad wrap wasn`t thought of then.
Did the glad wrap idea originate here or come from another forum? Who first let us know about it? He should be given an OBE. :)

http://www.homebrewandbeer.com/forum/vi ... t=gladwrap is the first I can find on this forum, courtesy of shaun- a guest. He mentions that he heard it from somewhere else.

Ta. So the idea`s been around for at least 3 years. I only started using it 3 months ago :(

I'm about to give it a go. Just 'borrowed' a almost finished roll from the dispatch at work.

Sounds like an idea worth trying anyway.

Unless it`s actually the proper kitchen wrap, you mightn`t get a good result. I tried 3 or 4 transparant films, they all got that much condensation on the underside you could see bugger all.
That doesn`t seem to apply with proper kitchen wrap, don`t ask me why.

Thats easy enough to fix. Maybe put a smooth pebble or other weighty object ( not to heavy but ) on the middle of the plastic wrap. I should weight it down in the centre enough to make any condensation run toward the middle under the pbject and drip back into the wort.
Of course don't use any object that would pierce the plastic, is is over heavy.

Not sure why kitchen wrap doesn;t get condensation. Maybe they coast it with something that repels water maybe.
either way it should still do the same job regardless. I know the kitchen wrap is a touch thinner then the stuff I just obtained. Kitched wrapp doesn't seem tough enough to me. ( plus its not wide enough ).

It`s tough enough, don`t worry bout that. Bit like the old GF`s fanny, it`ll stretch a yard before it tears an inch.
330 mill. is standard width size, should fit your fermenter unless you`re using pails.

fellas,

while your talking about glad wrap - how big a hole should you put in in it to let CO2 escape? Should there be more than 1 hole?

OMG, i hate to think of the answers coming to that question

this thread has me laughing my arse off

(on a serious note, you don't even need to make a hole - but if you want to, a single pinhole is quite enough)

maybe for you....

I like mine with 2 holes, though I am not sure I want any gas escaping from either

No actually KEG is correct, you do not need to put any holes in the glad wrap.

Uh yeah... no holes are required.

And KEG only needs one pin-hole sized one...
