Homebrew - The Good, The Bad...

Post by Evo »

So ahhh... I'm probably gunna be lynched for even suggesting this, but, has anyone besides me ever thought that being able to make gallons of beer cheaply, and having 80 litres of it on tap at home may NOT be a good thing ?

I mean, not that I'm an alcoholic or anything. The only reason I drink the beer I brew is cause it's so bloody good. BUT if a person WERE to have a problem like that, surely surrounding yourself with beer isn't the smartest move.

I've just scared myself. I think I'm going to go and have another beer.

Perhaps ignorance is bliss in this case - if you don't think its a problem then its not a problem.

But seriously, everything in moderation I think is the key. If one has 80L of beer then that is great, its only a bad thing when a large portion of it is consumed in a short period of time. Makes the enjoyment last longer too.

If you're like me, you're not really brewing it for just yourself. I'm ending up giving about half away as either take-homes (but bring the bottle back or die) or beers around the table. The benefit for me is that I get to drink my beer, and everyone else has to go back to the manufactured alcopop.
Not a bad trade-off in my book, and probably why kegging hasn't really appealed to me yet.
But anyway, if we're going to get philisophical about it, it's not just about drinking beer.

that's so seriously wrong ...
The majority of alcoholics wouldn't admit they have a problem. Make a test, if you can't spend a week without drinking alcohol, you have a problem.

Anti-fsck, worry not. I have mates. Mates that are willing to help rid me of my evil, demon beer. Drink me out of house and home is another way of putting it. And no, I too like the brewing process, but the end result is beer.

Kitkat, I'd go so far as to say nearly everyone on this board is an alcoholic to some degree. It just depends on your definition. And spending a week without doesn't prove that you aren't unfortunately.

Geez, what a downer subject. Who brought this up ?

Evo,

Do me a favour man,

Next time you have one of these little thoughts, sit down and wait for it to go away. I blew a keg last night and you are giving me a case of the guilties now.
:?
Mind you there was only two pints in it.

Dunno how you define being an alcoholic :?: Me, I don't think I've had an alcohol free day since about 1976. Some days I've had a bit too much as well and there is an automatic penalty associated.

But I don't drink till after work, I haven't missed a day off work due to drinking too much, and I don't get angry and hit people or abuse anyone because I've sipped on a few.

I could say the same about coffee..... I just drink it at the other end of the day

geez, looked in on the forum this morning for a read before work and what do I get, a first-up downer!

My stockpile is growing faster than I'm consuming at the present, I think due to the weather becoming slightly colder. This I take as a good thing, to me is shows that my consumption level is not driven by addiction or need but to some extent influenced by the weather. If it snowed in Perth I'm not sure what would happen, and no Dogger you don't need to send any so I can find out!

Just finished a health unit with my class on alcohol, tobacco etc and addictions. Remember there is a difference between an alcoholic and a drunk!

mmmm on that note it's off to school I go ( hi ho hi ho it's off to school I go!) {very sad}
Some people say I have a drinking Problem....
I drink, I get drunk, I fall over....
What's the problem?

I have a wife who monitors alcohol consumption...works a little too well for my liking

But if you resort to brewing your own I reckon you've got to be an alcohol lover on some level (be it alcoholic or not).

Me personally I brew because I'm no good with building things but love cooking new and interseting foods so brewing is another natural outlet for me to create something I and others can enjoy not so I can mass produce alcohol at a cheap price...I think most on this forum would be the same.

Cheers,
Jay.

Good point, Jay. My non-gender specific life choice partner defines me as a "tinkerer" because I'm always fiddling with stuff. Granted, she was right about the silliness of putting a streaming webcam on the motorbike (using VoIP to link back to the house over a 4km distance was pretty cool, tho), she's shuddering over the tree cannon we're building at the moment, and she continually scoffs at my (early) plans to build a jet turbine motor. But it's the same with the beer. No two brews are the same, and I'm already playing with the construction of brews (hence also the five-of-the-same-can brews experiment so I can isolate flavours).
I would suggest that someone who brews the same set brew over and over potentially has a problem. But then again, if we did that, we wouldn't be here, would we ...

I brew because I like the alchemy involved, the taste, and the feeling, but I also do it because it is cheap so that if I have a barbie I don't care how many people drink as it won't break the bank. I thought at one stage that I may have a problem so I just limited my bottle collection to 60 tallies and 5 2-litre soft drink bottles and I also let them age for a month before drinking. This means that there are dry spells every now and again and as I don't have a limitless surply I cannot get on it all the time even if I wanted to. I still get shit-faced sometimes but not everyday or every week, more just a few to wind down, mellow and easy out of the week

How much better does it get than sipping on a chilled glass of your own, whilst bottling up another worldbeater. ( my opinion ).

I use to brew for my dad for poket money when I was 13 for $1 a bottle.

I use to nick one every now and then.

Then when I shacked up with my wife I started making it again but I had a career change and I wasn't taking 100 original red back bottles with the ceramic top interstate.

Then this year went to a mates house at christmas and saw my first keg set up and I was mezmerized  I just had to have one and the rest is history.

The only thing is my wife drinks as much as what I do. :D

Actually I read somewhere that it is human nature to try and alter their state of mind.

Personally, Life is short, my missus is a nurse in long term care and rehab and I am not sure I need to see much past 90.
So, if you are regulating yourself only to see 100, I am not sure you really want to.

Morbid old thought isn't it.

Evo, why have you done this, I liked the fermentor in the lake way better.
