Discretion

Post by sago »

Dear Oliver,
Love this forum and it is great to browse in idle moments at work.
The only problem is that I now work in an open plan office and every man and his dog walking past can see the beer glass and the HB&B logo on the left hand side.It looks a bit obvious screening the bugger with a couple of post-its .
I guess I ought to be a better corporate citizen and browse at home but that wouldn't the same.
I have a compatriot (Friday lunchtime drinking partner)who is quite competent with all things computer so I will see if he has a sneaky way of disguising things.
A big pop up overlay of something work related would be good.

Hi sago,

I know what you mean!

I'm not sure whether this solution might affect other aspects of your work, but you could try turning off images in your browser. I know you can do it in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

Apart from that, I don't know what to suggest.

Sorry.

Cheers,

Oliver

Oliver,

Read this old thread and thought if you could assist sago then why not me :?:

Earning a crust as a boilermaker my problem is not so much 'disguising my monitor'

More like, how to avoid severing my lower limbs with a 9" Grinder whilst pondering the next Brew.

Please help before i don't have a leg to stand on

Sago,

see if you can get a privacy screen. One of the girls at work has one when as she does confidential stuff, they work a treat. They clip on the front of the monitor like those other anti-glare filters. With these things you need to be directly in front of the screen to see anything. Others will have to be standing directly behind you to see a thing.

Cheers.

Go to work at 6:00 am and stay there until 6:00 pm. browse the web while the 9 to 5 ers are absent. On top of it you will get a big promotion for working so damn hard and sticking in the hours. Then you will have an office and everyone can piss off.

Remember, it isn't the work you do but the impression of the work you do. Add 1/3 to all your deadlines, if you think it takes a week, tell them two, then you will be a miricle worker when its done in one. Someone who says one and does it in one isn't noticed, someone who says one and gets it done in 1.5 is incompetent.

And if you are ever in a meeting, just don't say anything, just nod sagely unless you really do have a few pearls of wisdom. ANd blow some sunshine up the bosses arse every now and again.

Stick with the Artful Dogger, we will get you in the corner office yet.

You dont' think I got this name with out having seduced Fido every now and again do you?

My work server/surf control blocks me from this site so I have to get on the puter at home. Which sucks. I can get onto http://www.bigfathairylesbiansgettingit ... onkeys.com but not a bloody home brew site. Wheres the logic there I ask you?!?!

Tobins, about $48, delivered overnight (search this site). I have recently done this. Chose a thermostat that would also let me control step temperatures for mashing (TS120S, as I said, $48).

Another (cheaper) option recently discussed somewhere this forum.

Mr Oliver,
I receive this website at work on a great big satelite dish and revel in all the glory of 19.2kbps on sunny days. Kamadeva be praised!

The incredible speed at the office VDU I fear I cannot enjoy at home wherein it is I connect to the internet by tin can and wire so we are reading pages when the speed counted in seconds per bit. To saving my poor eyes and hours of sleep, could you not put small markers on threads wherein the user has posted so that reading these threads selectively is more readily achieved isn't it? I very much like the empty glass for threads completely read. Perhaps threads that have been posted in by the logged in user could be displayed as glasses of stout instead of lager? I have been seeing many forums and the feature of marking posted-in threads is of great utility and I am sure that the whole community would benefit by it and enjoy it immensely.

Respectfully,
HV Bakshi

You don't want much, do you Hrundi? :D

Have you noticed that if you go to a thread that has unread messages in it, the posts read by you previously will be marked with a little white square at the top right before the word "Posted". Unread messages have an orange square.

Perhaps this helps?

Bugger ! Is that what it is ? I've been kicking it in the guts for a week trying to get it to gallop.

Reminds me of a Kevin Bloody Wilson song.

Indeed not. I am interested in threads that I have posted in, not threads that contain unread posts by others. Perhaps I am misunderstanding you?

So much easier just to see a dot or "replied to arrow "indicator like every other forum on the www but if I do not wish to push my point. One thousand apologies to the OP for the hijack.

Hrundi,

Righto ... on the index page just click on "View my posts" in the top right.

That will list all the threads you've posted in, with the newest ones at the top and the empty or full glass indicating whether there are new posts since your last visit.

Is this what you were looking for?

Oh, Mr Oliver,

It is very handy. My nipples explode with delight.

It is being slightly different system to other sites, but more than perfectly adequate.

My gratitude to you. Is this a new addition or have my eyes been skimming over the link this entire time?

Hrundi,

Glad to hear your nipples are doing you well.

That fabulous feature has been there since Day 1.
