BIAB Demo @Grain & Grape - 12April2008

Post by SpillsMostOfIt »

Due to the unprecedented popularity of our first Brew In A Bag demo, AHB Member Thirsty Boy and I have arranged with John and the guys at Grain and Grape to again demonstrate the BIAB method on Saturday, 12 April on their premises.

This single vessel brewing technique is probably the cheapest and easiest way to brew beer from grain. You can use it as a stepping stone to conventional homebrewing methods or you can, as I have done, use it for all your brewing needs.

This demo will focus on just how simple brewing from grain can be and to that end we will be brewing an American Pale Ale - the homebrewer's friend (or at least it was for my first few brews).

We will be starting and finishing early. The grain will hit the water at 9:30am, so you can arrive home with flowers and a shopping list to discuss with your other half over lunch.

Please note that we will not be supplying rotten fruit this time around. If you want to throw stuff at us, you need to bring your own... :D

Maybe someone with a video camera can record it on the day and put it on here for the benifit of those unable to be there?
Just a thought.......?

But then you'll just complain that you can't stream the video without buffering and timeout issues :)

What if we make such a video and burn it onto DVD and sell it to all the video shops for renting out on otherwise boring Saturday nights?

Or, sneak a copy of it into all the boxed Coopers kits at the local Kmart?

It's sort of like a club, but without a committee, and where the guy who owns the clubhouse wants to sell you grain and yeast and fermenters and stuff...

Hey SMOI, great to see you doing this!

Will BIAB kits be available for purchase at the demo? Might not be a bad idea to knock a few up for those that are not so handy with making things themselves?

It took me a couple of hours each to make my brew bags, so considering that sewing is not my most favourite passtime (I am brewing a bloddy big IPA as I type this, so you may be able to guess what I prefer to spend my time doing), I cannot imagine wanting to spend a couple of days sewing up baggies...

More importantly, I believe the size and shape of the bag is intimately tied to the size and shape of the kettle you're using, so each one should be custom made. It would take an accomplished seamstress (seamster?) maybe half an hour to build, so I don't see too much of an issue with getting an aunt on side. Some people have had success taking it to their local dry cleaner as many of them also do repairs and stuff...

I am in the middle of designing a baggie that is easier to sew up, but things just seem to keep getting in the way of finishing it. Which reminds me that I have to go and stir my mash...

Do Grain & Grape not sell stockpots as well? I did my bag on my wifes overlocker, I think it took me 5 minutes? I folded the fabric in half, sewed the two sides then made a little hem at the top for the rope to go through. It lasted 8 BIAB brews with no worries! No reason it has to be custom fitted to the tun... a imple tea bag shape will do!

My big baggie has lasted me over 30 brews and my smaller one has only done around a dozen. I like to do things in a particular way.

I've found that if the bag is too big, folds can form in which little communities of grain get trapped. I believe that a good mash stirring occasionally helps with good conversion and that these little pockets of grain do not help that. Too small a baggie imparts a similar effect, but to the entire mash. So I like to have a well-fitting bag. I'm a tailored-suit kind of guy, but if off-the-rack is more your thing...

It takes me more than 5 minutes just to gather together all the tools I need to make a bag...

I was going to ask if his wife helped him, but that would be tasteless in the extreme and I am not that kind of guy.

OK... I am that kind of guy. But it is so hard to change the habits of a lifetime.

For the record, I did mine on the kitchen table, otherwise alone.

To drag out the seemingly finished thread....

Did anyone video the demo?
