Cascade Ale

Post by StuTee »

Heey,
I wanted to make a Cascade-only brew, and I was trying to get the right hop additions for...

1.5kg LDME
100g crystal (it's old, it needs to go)
US-56 yeast
12L

I got plenty of cascade, any ideas on when it should go in?
I was thinking...
15g 30mins
15g 10mins
but then I don't really know :D

What is the AA% of your Cascade Hops?
I've assumed for now it is the same as my current stock, i.e. 6.3%.

I've put your proposed recipe into BeerSmith, and assumed a 12 litre boil.
Your estimated OG is 1046, so that is within range.
If your proposed hop schedule is used, you will end up with only 15 IBUs, whereas the style range for an APA is in the range of 30 to 50 IBUs.

You really need to either at least double your hop schedule, or do a full hour boil with some bittering hops, eg Super Alpha or Northern Brewer etc, to give you at least another 15 plus IBUs, depending on how hoppy you like your beers.

What do you have in stock?

Let us know, and also if my assumptions on volume etc are correct, and we can run the numbers.

Apart from that, it looks like you should have a nice clean brew.

just downloaded beersmith and wacked it in, I see what you mean.
I changed it to 20g @ 40min & 20g @ 10min, which gets 30.8 IBU, if I've done it right.
Yeah my cascade is 6.3% too. I've got a bunch of POR, Chinkook, Cluster, Amarillo lying around, but I want to keep it all-cascade for this one.

Fine if you want to keep it all Cascade, but Chinook is very much in style as a bittering hop for this type of beer. If you use it only for bittering, you will still have the dominant flavour and aroma of Cascade.
Chinook is one of the hops used in LCPA.
Anyway, it's your beer, brew it as you like it.

Well worth the money, in my experience.
The trial version only allows you to enter and save 3 recipes, so that won't last you long. Once you buy it, they email you the key. Enter that, and your trial version converts to the normal full version.
