Mainly asking Brother Stout for his help on this one.
Havent made one before but have 1kg of flaked oats in the freezer ready to go.
I want a silky feel to the stout, but not overpowering. Plenty of roastiness but again, maybe something moper complex with a few different spec malts.
Care to share Brother Stout?
Cheers

p.s. i brewed this stout yesterday and dumped it onto a 1187 yeast cake. I used green bullet in place of cascade.

Re: Oatmeal Stout - a little help please?
Ok, I have an oatmeal stout recipe - but according to my brewlog, I haven't brewed this beer since April 2006 which is an eternity ago for me!
Batch size = 21L
58.1% pale ale malt
9.5% (350g) Flaked Oats
8% Munich I
8% Flaked Barley
7% Roasted Barley
4% Crystal
4% Pale Choc malt and
1.4% Carafa Special I (I have no idea why but it worked!!) to finish it off...
Bittered with Northern Brewer (first wort hopped) and some EK Goldings with 20 to go in the boil were used and I fermented with S-04
Tasting notes tell me that the beer was well balanced with an agreeable bitterness from the Carafa and Choc malt. Looking at it now, it seems to be slipping towards a robust porter but it only had an OG of 1.045...The smoothness in the beer was noticeable but then again, there's a fair bit of flaked barley in the stout as well. So, I can report that 350g of oats will not overpower a standard batch.
According to my notes, I made a California Common / Steam Beer back in Jan 2007 and used 200g of flaked oats and it was quite a nice beer - all northern brewer hopped of course.
Hope this helps...

TL

Re: Oatmeal Stout - a little help please?
I have made several extract-based/partial mash oatmeal stouts and, to be blunt, been a bit disappointed with them. The major problem was that they all seemed to have this sourish flavour which made the stout quite un-moreish (speaking technically here
). Even a JS kit version I did once had this character to a greater or lesser degree. I haven't been able to lay my hands on a commercial version so I'm not sure whether this is a normal trait
but will be in the UK soon and so will be able to hunt about more for the genuine article. But I do want to have a crack with an AG version later in the year to put down for next winter and just wanted to know: 1) whether others had this issue; and/or 2)what causes it?
Cheers

Flaked barely and flaked oats
Wow.
Mashing regime? IBU?
Still deciding on which english ale yeast to throw at it, might even fire up some 1469 and see how it fares.

From memory it was a 1 hour mash at around 68C. Aim for 45IBU's or whatever your palate prefers...You should have a post boil OG of around 1.052 so don't be shy with the bittering hops to balance it out...drsmurto wrote:Flaked barely and flaked oats![]()

The flaked barley give a really nice mouthfeel to this beer and the oats, well, you did say an Oatmeal stout as opposed to a dry stout, didn't you?!
