Leftovers

Post by Jeff »

Hi all,
I have a Coopers Nut Brown to put down and noticed I've got bits and pieces in the cupboard that could be used. My thoughts were:

1 Coopers Nut Brown kit
1kg Coopers Brewing Sugar
500g Light Dry Malt
300g steeped Crystal grain
12g Goldings (but could use the Coopers supplied yeast)
11.5g Safale -04 yeast

I also have a 1kg bag from the HBS consisting of 500g dextrose, 300 light dry malt and 200g dark dry malt.

What do people think. I don't know about the malt, hops, the grain or the yeast (or much else for that matter...). Thanks for any advice

What's in the Coopers Brewing Sugar, Jeff? Check the ingredients, if it's the stuff I'm thinking of then it's 75% sucrose and 25% maltodextrin, and best thrown back in the cupboard for use the next time the missus is making cakes. Chuck everything else you've got into the brew (including your mixture from the HBS) and you should end up with a nice drop.

Cheers

I'd use the yeast as supplied. It's not the same as the other Cooper's yeasts, but a one that was only supplied with the nut brown ale (RIP, NBA).

That brewing sugar is crap. I don't know what Cooper's was thinking when they got into bed with CSR (a sugar company, for those of you O/S) to produce that little disaster.

I made a few beers with it, then gave up and finished off my last two bags in ciders. It sure did help produce a cider with a very cidery taste.

OK. Taking all advice this is the recipe I will try:

1 Coopers Nut Brown kit
1kg bag from the HBS consisting of 500g dextrose, 300 light dry malt and 200g dark dry malt.
500g Light Dry Malt
300g steeped Crystal grain
Coopers supplied yeast

It seems a larger amount of fermentables. Can anyone give a guess at how strong this will be :?:

Anyone with other comments re the recipe:?:

Jeff (and others),

There's a good tool for that here (estimating alcohol content etc)

http://www.liquorcraft.com.au/wa.asp?id ... etails=107

I was going to nick it (ahh, emulate it) and put it on my own site, but it works fine here.
