Think i screwed up rehydrating dry yeast

Post by SimonH »

I did a Siera Nevada earlier today. I thought i'd have a go an rehydrating the yeast even though my intuition told me not to as i'm sure if i'd just sprinkled it in it would have worked, regardless of all the science. But i boiled up some water and used it when it had cooled. Plus i cooled it further with cold water, in a small glass jug, so that it was warm to touch but not hot. I did about 1/2 a litre. I let it sit for 30 mins then poured it in the filled up fermenter. I also washed out the glass jug with a bit of cold water and poured that in. As yet nothing is happening. Does anyone see anything wrong in what i've done? And what is the best way to repair it - just head to the homebrew shop and ask for a packer of ale yeast??

Cheers.

You haven't necessarily done anything wrong. Just wait and see for now.

It never ceases to amaze me how HBers always jump to the conclusion that something is wrong!

haha yeah i was quick off the mark but that same intuition that told me not to mess with the yeast told me it wasn't working. I checked it this morning and nothing at all. So i got a packet of yeast and sprinkled it on the top. It looks now like something is starting to happen (after 9 hours). Does anyone know if there are any effects of 2 lots of yeast in there (if the other one was working)?? Am thinking not a lot? Or what would happen if you put half a bucket of yeast in there?

2 lots of yeast is no problem, most yast manufacturers actually recomend pitching 2 packs, if the other one was working it will most likely just speed things up a little
Thats it, you people have stood in my way long enough, I'm going to clown college
