Victorian Micro Brewerys

Post by Beach Bum »

At Beertopia last weekend and managed to pick up a booklet put out by the State Govt on "Craft" Brewerys. Apparently we humble Victorians are blessed with 25 micro's scattered around the State.

Each brewery has a spiel and relevent info including a listing of all their beers, opening hours, websites, etc..... :)

Wow.. I wouldn't have thought that there were quite this many. the mountain goat site is pretty good: http://www.goatbeer.com.au

Anyone know what sort of costs are involved in starting a microbrewery?

One interesting tidbit from this booklet is the blurb on the Buffalo Brewery (never heard of it? - makes two of us). It claims to have been in operation since 1902 and is the oldest operating brewery in Australia.
But the standout fact, is that the very first Victoria Bitter Ale was produced at this brewery at the turn of the previous century. They have a lot to answer for!
Saved money on the website by not employing a spellchecker too.

Geez. That Buffalo website is unforgivable. Three typos at a quick glance (and I'm no proof reader). Really makes them look silly in my eyes.

While I'm on my soapbox, the labels on Goat Beer. Being of graphic arts background, I gotta say, whoever designed those labels should be taken out the back and shot. I've seen the beers in my local bottlo and refuse to buy them out of principle. They look like cheap copies of those fruit flavoured girlie drinks (you know, breezers etc).

I'll get down now.

Holey Moley! Let's bold the typos on this page alone! I can't take seriously a brewery that can't even spell lager right! Or the name of their brewery! And they can't get the name of the place where they're from right, either! Can I use any more exclamation marks! ?

BREWERS OF DISTINCTION
Brewed only from the best wheat, barley,
hops, and our own pure spring water.

Buffalo Wheat Beer..................... 4.5% alcohol
A dark unfiltered Wheat Beer, which is similar to a Bavarian unfiltered Weifbeir. It's a very crisp, fruity and refreshing ale.
Buffalo Stout..................... 4.5% alcohol
An original German style, heavy dark Larger it is very rich and dominant in flavor with a smooth velvet texture
Buffalo Larger..................... 4.5% alcohol
This is a pilsoner type, full-strength beer with a typical boy bitterness bitterness. It is a rather dry, crisp beer with a characteristic Lager finish.
Buffalo Ginger Ale..................... 4.5% alcohol
An old time favourite, made from a traditional reciepie that will take you back to yesteryear.
Buffalo Dark Ale..................... 4.5% alcohol
A full strength dark beer. We use roasted malt to give this beer it's typical dark Ale character.
BUFFALLO BREWERY
Booromahn Hotel, Booromahn VIC 3678
Ph/fax; 5726 9215
Email;info@buffalobrewery.com.au

And by the way, what the f--- is a "Weifbeir". If you let Google be your friend, you'll see that the only folks in the whole wide world that have ever hear of "Weifbeir" is, you guessed it, "Buffalo Brewery, Brewers of Distinction".

And I don't think I dare ask what a "boy bitterness bitterness" is.

And I thought some of the stuff that came out of Cooper's Brewery could do with a proof read!

Oh, and if you get hungry, there's always the "dinning room".

Oh, and here's another favorite of mine:

Buffalo Stout ... An original German style, heavy dark Larger

Ah yes, the old traditional German lager.

If the beer tastes good who cares if they can spell? Anyone try the beer?

Was there any doubt that they meant Lager instead of Larger. They did say they were Brewers and not Websters/Oxford

Better make sure no one fat fingers anything on this site, the grammer police will get you.

Greg

Was thinking that but it only burned in at 4.8 percent.

And sorry about the rant, just its your oldest brewery. Give it respect. The were spelling jail, gaol back then and thorn was still being used for "th" (hence ye for those who aren't with me)

And still, anyone try the beer? This homebrew and beer not English 101.

(And I have no idea why I have picked this up as a cause)

No Dogger, haven't tried the beer, but I assume they must be doing something right if they're still brewing after more than a century...just reflects poorly on their business if they can't even spell correctly on their website. :)

I just hope for their sake that they have memorised their brew recipes and haven't written them down.

It seems you feel strongly about this Dogger, as do I. I realise that literacy is a big problem today, especially with the younger generation who seem to be focussed on bigger things instead of the basics.

I hold no prejudice towards anyone who can't spell, just as I hope they wouldn't hold prejudice towards me because I'm direction dyslexic (seriously - I can drive to the same place 5 times and get lost on the 6th). Thing is, knowing this, I wouldn't offer to give someone directions to my workplace.

Dogger, Oliver & Geoff have reviewed two of the Buffalo beers on their website and given them rave reports.
I suppose this proves you don't have to be able to spell to produce a decent bear...sorry beer. :)

Instead of bagging them has anyone bothered to contact them and let them know of the errors? They may have payed someone for the web design and want a refund (if they are poor at spelling they may not have noticed the mistakes).

I would like to know what VB was like when they were brewing it before CUB got their hands on it.

C'mon guys, they're obviously hardcore brewers. Let's see how good a website *you* can produce while imbibing your own product to assess the best way to spruik its worth.
The good grammar and spelling is just one of the reasons I believe that the Pyssedas Heavy Industries lads are really just a bunch of skirts trying to pick up a strapping homebrew junkie or two to call their own ...
