What does this taste mean?

Post by WSC »

Now maybe I have bung taste buds but I had a dark ale today that I'm sure had a faint aftertaste of Luncheon meat/ Ham. I have had a few of these beers and this is the first time I have come across this taste.

It was not enough to really but me off but it was not quite right.

Anyone know what this taste is from? Would it be the beer or poor cleanliness in the pub?

It is only the second time I have tasted this and the frist time was in a pale ale.

It is probably just a hint of smoke from the dark grains used.
Prost and happy brewing!

I too think it's a smattering of rauchmalt in the mash.

So is it good to have this taste in this style of beer, is it bad or is it just personal taste?

I didn't find the aftertaste that nice.

A slightly smokey taste in a Dark Ale is nice, I don't much like it in a Pale. Perhaps you are just very sensitive to it? I can't imagine it would be much if at all above threshold...
