Wholy cow.. 1080!

Post by inark »

No im not talking about finally getting a Full HD experience...
I made what i assumed would be a perfectly normal beer using the following...

1 Can of Coopers Canadian Blonde
250g of Light Malt Extract
250g of Brew Enhancer
250g of Honey
250g of Dry Light Malt Extract

Filled to the 23L mark...
Took a reading and got a reading of 1080!

What the hell went wrong?

Did you mix thoroughly? 1080 seems too high for a 23L batch and <3Kg of fermentables.

Cheers,

What Greg said.
Even mixing it properly might still leave you with a false high reading.
What happens is that all your goodies are poured into your fermenter first, and you fill all the nooks and crannies, including the tap outlet. You then add water, and stir. However, even though you stir, you never quite get all the goodies out of the tap outlet, so they stay undiluted to an extent. When you take a sample from your tap, the first thing you drain off are the mostly undiluted goodies, and that gives you a higher reading.
Given your ingredient list, I'd expect an OG in the range of 1.040 to 1.045, and a FG around 1.013 give or take a couple of points.

i put 6 litres of cold water in the fermenter first then dumped in the boil and then dumped in the rest of the water.

According to the good ol' impartial intertubes, 1080 makes them die in agony!

Anyone remember 1080 Snowboarding on the N64? I could hardly ever nail the 1080 though...
