Capping screwcap tallies

Finally got my hands on some glass bottles - after i got a chance to check them they are screw top bottles ! - can I still cap them with standard caps and a bench capper or have I wasted my money again???

not a waste Polar, just make sure you get the dual type crown seals! I use a mix and don't have any dramas!

Other tip is make sure the seal is on properly, there is a picture somewhere on the forum. I use twisties and roll tops, only difference is the twisties need a little more push when capping.

ZERO difference in quality of beer, both short and long term.

If you're using a bench capper you won't have any trouble getting a good seal (just like Craeg Bennett in year 9, but that's another story).

From what I understand, twist tops only break when you use a lever capper or something inferior. A bench capper should not present problems.

I used the lever capper that came with my Tooheys kit on 59 carlton cold bottles without breaking one. Tested it beforehand as well, filled a bottle with water, capped it and turned it upside down for half an hour, no leaks at all. I hope that means the seals are fine.

Screw top bottles are ok with me, its just those ripoff ones that shit me - pilfered a bunch of empty empires off a friend with no taste, and my dad has a carton of tooheys extra dry he bought 2 weeks ago, i was planning to use them until i noticed they were all 345ml

What is wrong with 345 (as opposed to 375, apart from the obvious that they dont holds quite as much). Most European "stubbies" (and many others besides) are actually only 330ml (normal crown seal), and plenty of people (me included, when I have run out of tallies, and 500ml bottles) use them.
The only European ones around 345 that I can think of are Grolsch (which I also use).

Welcome Polar - another Canberra brewer. Agree with all the above and one actual advantage of twist top tallies is that you twist off obviously to decant your first beer and (unless you have a 750ml glass) twist the top firmly on again. This keeps it fully gassed and good to go unlike an old fashioned seal. I have popped long neck twist tops too early (before head formation in the bottle) and twisted the top back on only to get a fine 600ish ml of beer a few weeks later.

p.s. Brewing Lagers in Canb in your garage right now should be keeping a perfect 14 dec C. natural temp control.
