Squires Hop Thief '09
Was just down at the local 1st Choice and came across this - must just have been released, as the JS website said it wouldn't be available till June 8. Hop profile is a bit different this year, their website says they are using POR and Southern Hallertau.
I did of course have to partake in a few, being a limited release and all. It's certainly a beautiful deep amber colour, however the flavour is not as strong as last years, presumably due to the different hops used. Still, I'm just getting over a bad cold so I probably should have waited until I actually have all my taste buds back and working.

I ducked in to a BWS last night and asked the kid behind the counter.
I think what he mumbled at me was something like we don't stock that.
It was in Elizabeth so i shouldn't be surprised....
Might try Dans this arvo.
Its on tap at the Wheatsheaf Hotel for any Adelaideans but am yet to taste it.

I tried a few at the Platform Bar in Brissie and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was expecting it to be a little more bitter but I'm not complaining.
Never did get to try the original release so I've got nothing to compare it to. Anyone know what hops were used in the first release?

Re: Squires Hop Thief '09
I got some yesterday at 1st choice as well and they also had Cascade first harvest as well so I got some of that too. Still got some of last years harvest too so I can see how that compares as well.
Re: Squires Hop Thief '09
I found it to be enjoyable but was still left underwhelmed. It was fine but I felt as though it was something I could make the equal of. The colour was lovely though, wish I could get my beers to look like that.
Re: Squires Hop Thief '09
Will, from memory, the '08 release was more of an APA - pretty sure it had Simcoe, Columbus and maybe Amarillo? Made a clone of sorts using those hops, turned out very tasty indeed.
Re: Squires Hop Thief '09
I popped into 1st Choice today and bought a sixpack of the '09 Hop Thief... I have a cold, so I really can't pick up much in the way of POR in it. Actually, I'm a bit underwhelmed at this stage - that said, I was expecting more of a big APA from this beer. Still, it is a good drop and worth a tasting.
Re: Squires Hop Thief '09
I have just got through a six pack of these. I am not particularly impressed with the vegetal flavours of the hops. It is a decent beer, though not nearly a favourite.
Re: Squires Hop Thief '09
i wish they'd just redo the '06 version, that was quite the drop.
Re: Squires Hop Thief '09
Mate of mine picked up a sixer and was kind enough to swap one for a coopers best extra. i think he may have gotten the better side of the deal though....
aroma was nice, but nothing much was happening once it got to the mouth.
That said, kudos to them for continuing to try new things. Here's to hoping the next one is made with British hops

The Hops are rumoured to be...POR, Tasmanian Hallertau and Galaxy. I have a Clone planned...and intend to use these.
I cant quite put this into a BJCP Style, maybe someone can help me there. Maybe an ESB ?
The yeast would be the factor. English ? If so which one ?
Still a work in progress, so more research and drinking.
Cheers

Haven't tried this yet - mind you, having bought a slab and a bit of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, I doubt SWMBO will let me buy any beers in the forseeable future!!
I'll make do with the stubbie next to me right now!!
Cheers,

Brought a six pack last night was very nice ,can definatley pick up amarillo dont know about por
also hallertau. Im thinking would be easy to get a better drop made at home.
As for colour a little bit of roasted barley and some carared ?
Plan to give this a go.
1.5 kg LDME
500G LLME
300G Carared
150G Roasted Barley
25g Amarillo @ 40 min
15g Hallertau @30 min
15g Columbus @20mim
10g of each @ 5min
Any of you Beersmith wizards give me a readout on this recipe be much appreciated.

Re: Squires Hop Thief '09
I revisited this beer last weekend and got extremely little aroma from it compared to when it was first released. Would this be a handling issue or a poor aging issue?
