Hi buscador,

I'm pretty new to all this brewing stuff so sorry if informing you of stuff you know already!! But I've used this calc and found it to be pretty accurate with the few brews I've done so far - perhaps a more experienced brewer could shed more light on its accuracy!

Hi AC,

When you say you no longer rack, does that include lagers as well?

I currently have a lager brewing in the fridge and was wondering whether to go out and buy a second fermenter on the weekend so that I can rack it after fermentation ceases.

I'm now a bit confused with what to do!

If I don ...

Thanks rwh,

I'll stop panicking now, relax and have a homebrew (although a pretty ordinary one from my first batch!!)....

Cheers,

I checked the fermenter this morning (24 hours after pitching yeast) and although there was no obvious action in the airlock, there was condensation on the lid, and there appeared to be the white "trub" forming at the bottom.

Will pop out today and get a spare saflager 34/70 just in case, but ...

Cheers Greg,

Nice idea but I have a feeling if I get that sort of setup for my beer before I do for my 2 daughters then my homebrewing days may be over... and there's no way I could live without my homebrew (or the 3 girls in my life - obviously!)

Thanks everyone (again...!!),

There is condensation on the lid, and I think there is some action! I don't want to check it too often as the temp will keep changing in the fridge - somebody needs to invent a video beer monitor - similar to a baby monitor but one that will work inside a fridge ...

Hi rwh,

I actually pitched the yeast early this morning before I had chance to read your post....

I got the wort ready last night and put fermenter (topped up to 23L) in the fridge to cool - temp was at 12C at 6am so got the starter - which was bubbling very very slowly....

I shook the bottle up ...

Thanks TL (again!!),

Seems I am quizzing you on two posts... So should I reduce the temperature of my starter to 12C if that will be the temp of the wort when I pitch?

At the moment it is just in a 750ml bottle at room temp (21C) bubbling away...

Cheers TL,

So when you say "The best bet, IMHO, would be to rack to secondary and cold condition the lager at around 12C for a few weeks" this is better than lagering say at 2C before bottling?

My plan was to cool the wort and pitch yeast at around 12C, then reduce to 10C for rest of fermentation ...

Yeast Starter Questions....searched but can't find answers!

Hi all,

I am planning on doing my first lager brew tomorrow evening and have just made a yeast starter form a dry yeast pack of saflager W34/70 (as per instructions on the How To Brew section of this website). A couple of questions (probably should have asked before I did the starter but oh well ...

Lethal,

I've noticed with the 2 brews I've done so far that the FG hasn't been as low as the "suggested" FG on either the Kit or with the Calculator above. Obviously I understand higher gravities than the kit suggests if I add other ingredients, but not sure why there would be differences otherwise ...

Hi Wambesi,

I don't know how accurate it is but the calculator here: http://www.liquorcraft.com.au/wa.asp?idWebPage=13235&idDetails=107

gives estimated OG and FG readings based on your ingredients - just put your details in and assuming the kit is 1.7Kg and you made up to 23 Litres, it suggests ...

Thanks Ross and Zuma,

Ross, is the S-189 the yeast that comes with the coopers bavarian lager kit. Read on a post that this is so!

Also, Ross, had a look at your site - I am in the early stage of my brewing career and for the moment only intend to do modified kits - do you sell beer kits (couldn't ...

intend to brew at about 12C. Just wondered if the yeast supplied will be ok

Zuma,

When you pitch at 16C do you then have to give the brew a diacetyl rest or do you just rack into secondary?

Cheers blandy,

That's pretty much what I figured but thought I'd ask the question...

I sent an email to Brewcraft so will see what they come back with - if anything!

Been reading a fair bit about yeast starters and culturing so may try a liquid yeast as you suggest.
