Hop Rhizomes - Wanted

G'day folks,

I want to have a crack at growing Hops. I sent drsmurto, but he doesn't seem to be around.

Is there any information I should know about growing them? Like, when? how? type? disease? fertiliser? etc?

And, most importantly, has anyone got a rhizome to sell to me?

Have a look for ''hopswest'

I grew my first lot last year, and its pretty easy, got all my hops from there, got great information with them.

I think they are a bit of a weed, and you have to stuff up an fair bit to have a poor return.

I put in 2 cascade, 1 hallertue and 4 chinook rhizomes.
Cascade went like the clappers, I got 280 grams dried.
Hallertau went poorly, too hot and dry here I think.
Chinook went OK, but rhizomes were small so this year will be better.

There's something nice about growing your own beer ingredients.

Am malting some grain at the moment, just to go to the next level of, 'home made'

I've been lazy and am yet to dig up my cascade and pearle to take cuttings to send to billybushcook. For the price of a post bag, I'd be happy to cut some more and send them your way, Jeff.

A quick question on planting....

I have POR and Chinook rhizomes that the good Doc sent. I am wondering about when to pop them into the ground.

Living in central Vic, we can have frosts right thru to November. Traditionally we plant tomatoes on Melbourne Cup day, but a few years ago we had a ripping frost after then which killed off the tomatoes anyway....

How frost-tolerant are newly planted hops?

If you can protect them from the frost then whack them in the ground early Spring.

We get good frosts here too until late September, early October. Took me 20 mins last week to de-ice my windshield in the morning and the house water pipes froze.

I planted 2 Victoria rhizomes i split 6 weeks ago and they are happy under 10 cm of horse manure.

In the past my hops have popped out of the ground before the last frosts and survived to fight another day. They normally dont grow for a few days after the frost (shock?) but get going again without an issue.

I'd say plant them and perhaps cover them either a plastic sheet or even shadecloth.

If you can kill hops you might want to look into buying plastic plants.... they are like weeds.

I've put my rhizomes in the ground today. Very excited.

Weather is becoming really nice in my region at the moment, so generally how long does it take for the hops to wake up and send out a shoot?

From memory, mine last year were sprouting around late September to mid October. I could be remembering wrong, though. It definitely wasn't until around mid November that they really started taking off. First-year crops, though, so they may be faster at it this year.

Chinook will shoot last giving every other variety a head shoot and then will overtake them all. Growth of >20cm in a single day is normal in the height of summer.

My original Victoria has already broken the surface, a tad early from memory but we'll see how it deals with the frosts we are still likely to get before the AFL GF. The 2 Victoria i planted haven't shot yet. The chinook and cascade are still asleep.

I'd expect first year rhizomes, particularly those i sent to take a while to shoot. Mine are relatively small and with little or no roots so they will spend the early part of the season building up their root structure.

Thanks for the info. I've never grown anything from a rhizome/root before, so wasn't quite sure what to expect.

It's just as well that I've protected the bed with chicken wire. My cats like to use my gardens as litter trays

Put my rhizomes in today. We have been having lovely mild days, but with morning frosts, so I put them in a couple of inches down and put a few inches of clover lawn clippings over the top.
