Have I buggered it?

Post by Link »

So in a brewing frenzy tonight I put down two extract brews at once. One of which is, or at least was, an IPA. Somehow in my juggling of the two, I've buggered something and the IPA that should have had an OG of about 1055 (it's a recipe I've used before) has come out with an OG of 1098!

Tasting the wort, it's obviously nowhere near as bitter as it should be, but still tastes OK - though early days obviously. And given that I've messed something up I can't be sure what the actual ingredients used were.

So, any chance that a beer with an OG that high will actually be drinkable? Could it be OK, but just need a label warning not to operate heavy machinery after drinking?

Any ideas?

Hard to know unless you give us the recipie.
Beware of first readings, temp and sediment wise as they can be misleading, always drain off about half a glass then take a reading.

Yeah, unless you are adding ingredients to a small puddle of warer, or you are adding mountains of ingredients, that kind of difference should be able to put down to an inaccurate reading.

Post your recipe with any notable changes at the time of brewing.

I personally take a reading and know it will be too high as sediment from the tap that are not mixed is in there. then i take 2 more and these are usually the same and anything 10-15 below the first.....i use these as the SG......
When my drinking affects my work the solution is easy. Stop working.
