black patent doesnt need mashing. Steeping is fine. But the MO definately needs a mash.

Re: Tooheys kits
ive found the tooheys dark kit to leave a little to be desired. The coopers is much better. I remember as a novice brewer being sucked in to the idea of a tooheys dark kit + 1kg of dex = tooheys old. this is simply not the case. If you want to make good beer with those kits you really need to be ...

Re: Pics of a brew day
i just picked up my new esky (soon to be mash tun). Its a new 55L willow, same as the Dr's and James' by the sound of it. It is red tho so it should mash faster.
I bought it off a guy on ebay. For some reason he had it listed as 5.5L with a starting bid of $20 but of course noone bid on it. Me ...

Re: Boonies LCPA recipe
ive done this recipe with a coopers draught kit and it came out a treat. A real ale kit has pretty high IBU (30 i think) and may make it excessivly bitter....but i guess it all depends on taste.
Re: Fig Beer
everything that ive read about adding fruit to beer is as follows:
- freeze the fruit, this ruptures the cell membranes releasing all the goodies
- only add it to the secondary because primary fermentation tends to carry off the flavours with the CO2.
but you've mentioned that you going to do ...

I was happy with beersmith when i was using a PC although i did find that it wasnt always very acurate when calculating gravities for extract. Perhaps they put that bug in on purpose to make everyone want to do AG. :D

Re: Carbonating a keg with Dry Ice?
when i used to work in a lab we used to get a small bit of dry ice and put it in a plastic 2ml vial with a snap on lid and then unsuspectingly slip it into someones lab coat while they were working. About 30 seconds later the work got interupted by a loud pop.....completely harmless but lots of fun

Re: choose your yeast
I collected close to 500mL of Coopers yeast slurry from my CSA clone and intend on using it for a few other beers - dark ale, old ale and a stout. A cheap source of a versatile yeast!
I have recultured some yeast from a coopers stout to use in my own stout, my sources indicate however that they ...

Re: choose your yeast
Does your HBS stock dry yeast? Why not use some US-05 for your ales and save your money for WLP strains that you might want to purchase for specialty brews?
Cheers,
TL
It does stock dry yeasts but why would I pay $4 for new yeast every batch when I can pay $18 for 1 liquid yeast and use it until ...

choose your yeast
So Im in the market for some new ale yeast. For the last year ive been using WLP002 English Ale Yeast and i have been fairly happy with the results despite its fairly low attenuation. Ive heard good things about WLP001 and would give it go however my LHBS only stocks a fairly limited range of White ...

Re: Partial Mash Instructions
hey TL I have a quick question for you about your partial instructions as im about to embark on my first partial.
