Bottling question
Bottling question
Hi guys, my name is Grant and I am new to this forum, and to homebrewing, I have just made my first wort and am at the bottling stage but cannot find anywhere that tells me exactly how full I should be making each bottle before capping, I am using 750ml (largies) and am adding 2 per bottle of the "morgans" cabonation drops. Sorry if I this question gets asked a lot by us begginers but I had a quick flick through the other posts and couldnt find an answer. Any help much appreciated.
Cheers,
Grant

5cm's sounds a little too much to me. I try to leave less headspace. Leaving too much can create an imbalance of pressure with the sudden releasing of CO2 upon opening the bottle. This can drag up sediment & sometimes, if the beer is already highly carbonated, cause the beer 'climb' out out of the bottle.

Depends on what shape bottle you have though. A wide fat stubbie will leave less 'length' (e.g. maybe 3cm from the top) when you remove the bottler, while a long, slender bottle (e.g. the little creatures ones) will appear to leave a 'longer' gap (e.g. maybe 5cm from the top).
I wouldn't worry too much about it - just do what the other brewers have recommended and fill up as much as you can, and your gap will be the space the bottler used to take up.

Ah how good it must be to be set in one's ways & never question the effects of certain processes.r.magnay wrote:For christ sake!!! just fill the bottle to the top then take the bottler out and put the lid on!!..........................it will be alright!!!

Yeah Chris,
After putting the lid on a few thousand bottles of home brew you will become quite confident that what you have been doing all that time works, well at least I have...................as some one pointed out earlier, it is not exactly rocket science!!
Subaman................just fill the bloody bottles to the top and remove the bottler and wack the bloody caps on........trust me.it will be alright!!

I agree. As long as my beer is some where as close to the lip of the bottle (as I can get it without spilling too often) when the little bottler is removed, then it's right in my book. I'm of the opinion that the dimensions of the little bottler are such that it leaves the correct amount of head space.r.magnay wrote:For christ sake!!! just fill the bottle to the top then take the bottler out and put the lid on!!..........................it will be alright!!!
I always bottle in 750/800ml longnecks and the gap at the top is consistent to within about 5mm.
It's really not worth getting your knickers in a twist about.
If someone chooses to bottle in special bottles that are not usual beer holding containers, then that's their choice and they'll have to work out a method that suits them.
It may take a bit of experimentation with your dosing rates and method to get it worked out, but the only way to find out for certain if your doing it right is doing it. So, JUST DO IT!
This is Homebrew country, Piss On or Piss Off!
