Bottling question

Post by Subaman »

Hi guys, my name is Grant and I am new to this forum, and to homebrewing, I have just made my first wort and am at the bottling stage but cannot find anywhere that tells me exactly how full I should be making each bottle before capping, I am using 750ml (largies) and am adding 2 per bottle of the "morgans" cabonation drops. Sorry if I this question gets asked a lot by us begginers but I had a quick flick through the other posts and couldnt find an answer. Any help much appreciated.
Cheers,
Grant

Grant on the 2 brews I have bottled to date I have left about 3cms as I find if you fill to the top of the bottle and then when you removed the bottler tube this is roughly whats left. No probs so far though I do recall reading somewhere to leave 5cms.

all the best

Sorry mate, didn't mean for you to take it like that..

I just meant that there isnt any science to it because it wont make much difference if you leave 3cm or 5cm..

Recommende gap is 5 cm but im with damage i just fill to the top and once the bottler comes out you have a gap which is sufficient.

5cm's sounds a little too much to me. I try to leave less headspace. Leaving too much can create an imbalance of pressure with the sudden releasing of CO2 upon opening the bottle. This can drag up sediment & sometimes, if the beer is already highly carbonated, cause the beer 'climb' out out of the bottle.

Fill to the top then remove bottler device. Less air in there the better. Quicker carbonation.

Depends on what shape bottle you have though. A wide fat stubbie will leave less 'length' (e.g. maybe 3cm from the top) when you remove the bottler, while a long, slender bottle (e.g. the little creatures ones) will appear to leave a 'longer' gap (e.g. maybe 5cm from the top).

I wouldn't worry too much about it - just do what the other brewers have recommended and fill up as much as you can, and your gap will be the space the bottler used to take up.

Just leave a bit.

Does it really matter?

if you are determined to have the perfect amount of headspace, why dont you have a look at some comercial beers. Maybe take an average.
Im sure they have done their homework.

Ah how good it must be to be set in one's ways & never question the effects of certain processes.

I just fill to the top and when I take out the little bottler thing, a gap is left from the displacement anyway. Seems to work fine.

Yeah Chris,
After putting the lid on a few thousand bottles of home brew you will become quite confident that what you have been doing all that time works, well at least I have...................as some one pointed out earlier, it is not exactly rocket science!!

Subaman................just fill the bloody bottles to the top and remove the bottler and wack the bloody caps on........trust me.it will be alright!!

I agree. As long as my beer is some where as close to the lip of the bottle (as I can get it without spilling too often) when the little bottler is removed, then it's right in my book. I'm of the opinion that the dimensions of the little bottler are such that it leaves the correct amount of head space.
I always bottle in 750/800ml longnecks and the gap at the top is consistent to within about 5mm.
It's really not worth getting your knickers in a twist about.

If someone chooses to bottle in special bottles that are not usual beer holding containers, then that's their choice and they'll have to work out a method that suits them.
It may take a bit of experimentation with your dosing rates and method to get it worked out, but the only way to find out for certain if your doing it right is doing it. So, JUST DO IT!

Lessen the aggro people, he's a beginner who just asked a simple question!

Filling to the top and leaving only the space made by the vacating bottle filler is how I've always done it.
