Storing yeast/hops pellets

Post by Toam »

I just got some dry yeast and some hops pellets in the mail...

Now, I am aware that these are kept in the fridge in homebrew stores but is it better to store them in the fridge or the freezer?

Hop pellets: fridge or freezer. It's up to you.
Yeast I would say fridge as freezing may kill them.
I'm sure other will clarify or disagree.

I chuck the yeast in the fridge and the hops in the freezer.

You might be able to freeze the yeast but I didn't want to risk killing them....

I wasn't sure about putting the yeast in the freezer for that exact reason, so I won't.

I think I'll chuck the hops in the freezer though.

Cheers guys.

Yeah, freezing dried yeast reduces their viability by 90%. Even worse in a frost free freezer.

You can freeze them, but there is a trick to it. Unless you need to store them for a prolonged period ie 12 months or so, fridge is by far the easiest option.

One tip for the yeast, I put one straight in the brew after it had been in the fridge and the yeast died  I sure did stink  . Dunno if it was the shock from going from 4 degrees to 20-23 degrees, but I am sure it would not have helped.

I take my yeast out of the fridge 30 minutes to an hour before pitching now.

Cheers
