Just asked my Mrs to get me a carton of Cooper's while she was down at the shops but brought back the Crown instead..

But my confession is....... I like it :) It's heaps better than what used to be my staple beer which is another confession in itself...

Emu Bitter!! I have even previously stated it as being God's Nectar   What was I thinking??

Oh well it's out now, hope you don't judge too harshly. :(
Nothing wrong with Crown Lager-nothing at all.
I have a theory that a lot more blokes on beer forums are drinking commercial beer than are letting on, but won`t say so cause they`re frightened of having rocks thrown at them by the brewing fraternity. :(
Not me thank you- if someone turns up here with a carton of average quality commercial beer and wants a hand to drink it,.......Game On! :D
None of those "I`m a homebrewer so I`d never drink that" fairytales for me.

i recently bought the GF's dad a bottle of Old Speckled Hen for his birthday.

he thought I should join him in having a beer with him, and gave me a West End Draught can.

it was pretty terrible, tasted watered down.

I walk to work. This morning I halfway to work, found a coopers bottle in a black recycling box. I tipped out the contents inc a ciggie butt and sequestered it in a hidy hole near home to pick up tonight. This is in view of everyone. Surry Hills is not especially appreciative of scavenging types, esp those looking like they are going to work.

Some time back The Resches Brewery in Sydney stood like a proud castle in an oasis and supplied many gallons of the amber necter to the thirsty inhabitants of NSW. The workers inside the great castle realized the important role they played in the in the daily lives of the ordinary man who frequented the beerhouses of which there were plenty around the state so they decided to ask the management for more money to add to their already generous remuneration and and having access to copious quantities of free beer. Of course management refused and they all went on strike, usually just before Easter or Christmas. After a couple of years of this repetitious anti-social behaviour CUB saw an opportunity to market their flagship draught beer VB into the many Clubs and Pubs across the border on a twelve month contract and guaranteed regular supply. As Resches over time began losing their market share to CUB the great castle finally collapsed and withered in the vine. Many Resches drinkers became VB drinkers as Tooheys wasn't an option and sadly I was one of them. Off course VB is now firmly entrenched in the state of NSW.
I still drink it when I visit Sydney without fear or favour for old times sake.

A lesson learned from this sorry saga is, Never get too greedy and lose your perspective as someone just may slip under your guard.

Two words, gentlemen:

Tooheys Red.

Now there's something of which I have put a LOT away (years ago, admittedly). When a poor uni student, one just can't go past a sign reading "30 cans for $26".

I've had a couple recently. Razor blades. Horrible stuff. Thank heavens for Home Brew.

I can confess in my uni days that we absolutely SMASHED some of the 440mL cans from something called Independent Brewers or similar. I think the names were Blacksmith Bitter, Haagen, and another one or two that escape me... for reasons unknown. Cheap, hedonistic times. We used to have so many empties that we filled the remainder of the street's bins with our bottles and cans.

Another confession of this era is the Chinese 'cooking' spirit that you could get via certain means; Bijou or something... damn... 50+ % 500ml for $12 and a comparatively clean morning to anything near that price bracket...

Ouch! a headache in every bottle. Tooheys Red should be put on the hit list as a banned substance

Got to admit that I have a soft spot for Tooheys Old. Damn fine beer!

Also, VB is OK if used as part of a shandy in 100 degree temps after mowing the lawn. Drink 6 of the straight and ya get the worst headache around.

I had a Hahn Ice last night  , couldn't justify opening a whole longneck of HB to just have a pot. Just goes to show I'd rather drink crap than waste my HB

I dont mind Tooheys Old at all either Wassa. RIght up there for one of the best megaswill produced beers on the market.

Saying that i tend to have a supply of CPA in the fridge 'for the yeast'.

And as for only wanting a half pint, thats why you need a keg setup! 8) but i will put money on the fact you wont stop at one!

Geeeeeeeelong Bitter
$1 pots, $4.50 jugs, Monday nights near my old uni.
The first couple tasted horrible each night, but once you 'acclimatised' the stuff flew down the hatch
Despite the cheapness, its amazing how much money we managed to put away there...

Hahaha, Stu, I'm guessing you're talking about good old Public Bar. The first few times, I thought it was fantastic. But after last time, I'm not sure that I'll be going back. Usually, I will drink absolutely anything... but I could not stomach the Geelong Bitter.

The one and only... Surely there is nothing better than a nice cold glass of Geelong Bit... ahh who am I kidding
I went through a Dan Murphy's in Geelong a few years ago and found a Geelong Pale Ale and a Sparkling - I'm not sure if it was a bad batch but those two beers made the Bitter look amazing. They were truly truly awful, especially the Sparkling. On par with my worst enemy (Boag's St George)

Now that was a truly disappointing beer.

OT, but does anyone know (Taswegians?) if Boags still makes the "Original Bitter" I used to drink that with the old boy, and I remember it tasting OK for the price.

I did a bad bad thing

Now, please take it easy on me here. Last night I took the final OG reading of a brew that had sediment stuck in the tap (this is the first time this has happened to me in the 100 odd batches i've done), took me 10 mins just to drian enough for a sample. I said to myself, i'll be buggered if i'm gonna sit up all night bottling, imagine how long it would take to fill one longneck, let alone 28 of the bloody things. I grabbed my stirring paddle, sanitised the hell out of it, and went in to try and move some of the sediment away from the tap hoping that next time I turned it on the crap still inside the tap would come out. It did not. Anyway, after fart arsing around for 20 mins I cracked the shits and just stuck my mouth over the tap and blew the shit back in, that got her going. I am ready for my stoning now
